Our Curriculum
All children have an entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to enable them to:
• Understand the relevance and purpose of learning activities.
• Experience levels of understanding and rates of progress that bring feelings of success and achievement.
All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and pace suitable for their ability. Our SEND philosophy places SEND children at the heart of personalised learning and our curriculum is tailored to meet individual pupil needs.
At times modifications to the curriculum may be implemented. To successfully match pupil ability to the Curriculum, Broom Cottages continues to be committed to providing:
• A range of teaching and learning styles.
• Differentiated materials (both for reinforcement and extension).
• Access to ICT.
• Additional in class support.
• Additional out of class support.
• Flexible groupings (including small group work).
• The appropriate use of rewards and sanctions.
• Mentoring and counselling
• A broad range of extra-curricular activities, including homework club, one to one support and booster/extension sessions.
• Assessment procedures that emphasise pupils’ strengths and achievements.
• Applications during national testing at Key Stage 2 to obtain access arrangements as appropriate.
• Lessons have clear objectives, we differentiate work appropriately and we use assessment to inform the next stage of learning.
• Teachers use a wide range of strategies to meet children’s special educational needs.
Gifted and Talented
Broom Cottages also caters for pupils who are gifted in a particular subject or talented in a particular area. We find many opportunities to develop these both within their regular lessons and access to wider experiences.
