Homework
Homework will be set by class and group teachers when appropriate. We expect homework to be completed and returned on the appointed day. Parents/carers can support us in this by providing a quiet room in which the children can work and ensuring books and resources are kept away from younger children and animals!
Homework will usually be linked to learning in literacy and maths and may include tasks such as:
- Learning spellings
- Practising timestables
- Occasionally your child may be asked to research a new topic or theme and bring their findings into school. Please support us in fostering a love of independent learning.
Homework tasks may be paper based, but please also look out for links to online resources such as Oxford Owl, TT Rockstars etc. These links will also be shared with parents/carers via ClassDojo and your child's log in details will be provided by their class teacher.
Reading
At Broom Cottages, our aim is for all children to become confident readers who read for pleasure and have a love of books. With this in mind, we discuss the importance of reading during assemblies, sharing motivational quotes and, of course, practise our reading skills during daily phonics and reading lessons.
Please support us in helping your child by hearing them read regularly. To give children the best possible chance to be successful, we hope to see at least three occasions each week when an adult has listened to their child read. Also, take time to read to your child or challenge each other by taking it in turns to read parts of a good book together. Remember, reading regularly helps with spelling, vocabulary development, reading fluency, comprehension and, of course, it can spark real imagination which helps children to become great writers. Most importantly of all, it can and should be good fun!
Top tips:

Ask questions about what they have read to check their understanding. The VIPERS document below is a useful guide to get you started.
Read a wide range of materials including stories, poetry and rhymes and non-fiction.
Your child will bring a reading book home weekly. Children may also bring a library book home.
